Blending Glass Paints

This video shows you how to blend glass paints using the flood fill technique. The video show a range of glass paints being used, waterbased and solvent based, transparent and pearl. Blending the paints is a basic glass painting technique which you can use to give your project shading, variation in colour and gradients.

The amount of time you leave between adding the first paint colour and the second (and even third) can make a big difference in how the finished blend can look, as can the type of paint used and the quantity of each colour used.

There are quite a few things which can make a difference to how the paints blend.

  • How much of each paint you put on.
  • The number of different colours.
  • The type of paint.
  • What paints you put where.
  • The amount of time you leave between putting the different colours on.

Some things are quite obvious. The more flowing the paint, the more it will blend. Some colours will produce a gradient between the two of them in the middle, others will produce a completely different colour in the middle.

Other techniques include dropping clear glass paint into some areas to give a lighter version of the same colour. Or dropping white pearl into coloured pearl paint.

Never be afraid to give the paint a “push” with your brush to encourage it to blend. As with all of these sorts of techniques practice and experimentation are useful. Use a spare piece of glass to test out any colour combinations or technis first. This will enable you to see if it is going to give the desired effect.

I have a couple of favourite colour combinations I use regularly.  Purple, Royal Blue and a bit of clear dropped in for a night sky or space. I always to leaves with two geeens, a lighter one on the outside and a darker one down the middle. I’m sure you will come up with your own combinations for Blending Glass Paints.

  1. Very interesting experiment. I’ve only tried glass painting once in a small class, normally I’m a canvas painter…but think i would really enjoy this type of artwork too. Thanks for you great tutorials!

  2. For blending, do u drop clear medium with the colours you want to blend and blend it on the painting surface??? I see that when I mix two colors it looses its glossy finish. I feel I am going wrong somewhere

    1. I use several methods. Loading one side then the other and encouraging them to meet. Dropping one colour into another. You can drop clear or white in, they give a really nice effect.

Some of the colours aren’t as glossy as others and you may have issues if you use one of those.
